Pittsburgh Bike Lanes, Trails & Bike-Share Stations: The Complete Directory

This is the most complete map of how to get around Pittsburgh on two wheels: every on-street bike lane, every trailhead on the Montour Trail, the Great Allegheny Passage, the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, and the Eliza Furnace Trail, plus every POGOH bike-share station in the city and suburbs — 203 access points, searchable by neighborhood and type below, including the Montour Trail's suburban trailheads and the Panhandle Trail out through South Fayette.

Pittsburgh doesn't get enough credit here. It's a Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community, it ranks 12th among the 60 largest U.S. cities for bike commuting, and the Montour Trail alone runs 46-plus miles through the South Hills and western suburbs. Scroll down for the directory, trail spotlights, the real Pennsylvania bike laws, and where trail access shows up most if you're house hunting.

Best Trails To Ride In Pittsburgh

Forget whatever you've heard about the hills. Pittsburgh backed into one of the best trail networks on the East Coast, mostly because the same rivers and abandoned rail lines that made it a steel town left behind hundreds of miles of flat, car-free right-of-way. Here's where to actually point your wheels.

The Montour Trail

Forty-six miles, almost entirely car-free, running from Coraopolis around the airport, through Cecil, McMurray, Peters Township, Bethel Park, and South Park, down to Clairton. It's one of the longest rail-trails in the country, and people actually commute on it. I recently sold new construction in South Fayette where the builder's whole pitch was the trail running along the back of the development, and it worked: buyers picked those specific lots because they could get onto 46 miles of trail without ever touching a road. If you want 20-plus miles with zero stoplights, this is it.

Eliza Furnace Trail (the "Jail Trail")

Named for a 19th-century blast furnace, nicknamed for the county jail it runs behind Downtown — this is the workhorse of the system. It follows the Monongahela from Downtown through Junction Hollow (with a spur up into Oakland, right past Pitt and CMU) out to Hazelwood, where it ties into the Great Allegheny Passage. Flat, paved, direct. If you work Downtown or in Oakland, there's a good chance this is already your commute.

Washington's Landing to the North Shore

This is the one to send visitors on. Start on Washington's Landing — a genuinely quiet little island in the Allegheny with a marina, herons working the shoreline, and none of the traffic of the mainland two minutes away — then cross over and pick up the Three Rivers Heritage Trail along the North Shore, past PNC Park and Acrisure Stadium, with the Downtown skyline sitting across the water the whole way. Ride it at golden hour if you can time it.

The Great Allegheny Passage

Start at Point State Park and, if you've got the legs and the days off, you don't stop until Washington, D.C. — about 335 miles later on a fully connected trail (the GAP hands off to the C&O Canal towpath in Cumberland, MD). Most people ride a piece of it — Point State Park to McKeesport makes a solid half-day out-and-back. Worth knowing it's there even if you never ride the whole thing.

Worth knowing before you head out: POGOH bike-share stations are thick on the ground Downtown and through Oakland, Shadyside, the Strip, and Lawrenceville, so trying any of this doesn't require owning a bike first. And every PRT bus carries a two-bike rack, with bikes allowed on the "T" at high-platform stations — so a flat tire or a sudden downpour thirty miles from home doesn't have to end the day.

Sources & scope: On-street bike lane data is drawn from the City of Pittsburgh's official on-road bicycle pavement-markings dataset (WPRDC, through June 2016), supplemented with newer BikePGH- and DOMI-documented projects built since. Trail access points come from Friends of the Riverfront's official Three Rivers Heritage Trail map and the Montour Trail Council's official trailhead list, with additional trails from general trail guides. POGOH station locations come from POGOH's official station dataset. This is a living network -- new protected lanes, Neighborways, and bike-share stations are added most years, and a few projects (including a planned east-west connector near Shady Ave and Squirrel Hill, and a county-funded POGOH expansion into several suburbs) are in progress but not yet built, so they aren't listed here as current access points. Map links open Google Maps in a new tab. Always confirm current conditions before you ride.

Pittsburgh Bike Safety & Pennsylvania Law, in Plain English

You don't need a law degree to ride safely here. A handful of Pennsylvania rules cover almost everything, and the rest is common sense on hilly city streets.

  • Drivers have to give you four feet when passing. Pennsylvania's passing law is stricter than most states' three-foot rule, and drivers are required to slow down while they pass. Know it — and don't be shy about taking the lane where there isn't four feet to give.
  • Helmets are only legally required under age 12, bike or e-bike. Still a good idea at any age, especially on these grades.
  • Lights are required from sunset to sunrise — a front white light visible from 500 feet, a rear red reflector visible from 500 feet, and amber reflectors on the sides.
  • Sidewalk riding is generally fine outside business districts — yield to pedestrians, announce yourself before you pass.
  • E-bikes follow one Pennsylvania definition, not the national three-class system: 750 watts or less, 20 mph on motor power alone, minimum rider age 16. No license, registration, or insurance required. A 28-mph "Class 3" e-bike doesn't meet that definition — it's not legally a bicycle here.
  • Bikes ride transit, too — a two-bike rack on every PRT bus, up to two bikes on the "T" at high-platform stations. Bad weather changes the plan; it doesn't have to end the ride.

Quick disclaimer: this is a plain-language summary, not legal advice. Always check current PennDOT and Pittsburgh Regional Transit guidance for the full rules.

Trail Access Matters When You're Choosing a Neighborhood

I sold new construction in South Fayette where the whole development was built along the Montour Trail. The builder ran the lots along the trail on purpose, and that's exactly why people bought there.

The Montour Trail runs about 46 miles, and it cuts through more than half the towns I sell in: South Fayette, Moon Township, Cecil, McMurray, Peters Township, Bethel Park, South Park. Ask about trail access on a house in any of those, and nobody's going to look at you funny for it.

In the city it's the network as a whole — Shadyside, Bloomfield, Lawrenceville, Highland Park, South Side, Oakland. All of them put you on the Three Rivers Heritage Trail or the Eliza Furnace Trail in a few minutes.

If you actually ride, say so when we start looking. It changes what I show you.

Note: the /communities/ link above uses your standard slug format based on your existing area guides — worth a quick check against your live URLs before this goes up, and worth adding matching links for Moon Township, Upper St. Clair/South Park, etc. once those pages exist.

Your Questions About Biking In Pittsburgh, Answered

Pittsburgh Bike Lanes & Trails FAQ

The four trails worth building a ride around are the Montour Trail (46-plus car-free miles through the South Hills and western suburbs), the Great Allegheny Passage (150 miles from Point State Park to Cumberland, Maryland, continuing another 184.5 miles into Washington, D.C. on the C&O Canal Towpath), the Three Rivers Heritage Trail (a 33-mile network along both banks of all three rivers), and the Eliza Furnace Trail -- locally nicknamed the "Jail Trail" -- a flat 5.7-mile commuter route linking Downtown to Oakland and Hazelwood. This directory maps every access point for all of them, plus every on-street bike lane and POGOH bike-share station in the city.

The Montour Trail runs about 46 continuous miles from Coraopolis, along the Ohio River, to Clairton, on the Monongahela -- passing near Pittsburgh International Airport and through Cecil, McDonald, Muse, Bethel Park, Peters Township, and South Park along the way. With its branch trails, the full network covers more than 60 miles, almost entirely on a smooth crushed-limestone surface fully separated from traffic. It's one of the longest rail-trails in the country, and it connects to the Panhandle Trail at McDonald and to the Great Allegheny Passage via the Clairton Connector.

The Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) starts at Point State Park, right where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet to form the Ohio -- there's a mile-marker medallion at the water's edge marking mile zero. From there it runs 150 uninterrupted miles to Cumberland, Maryland, on crushed limestone, where it connects directly to the C&O Canal Towpath for another 184.5 miles into Washington, D.C. -- about 335 miles total on a single connected trail, without ever riding on a road.

Yes -- Pittsburgh holds Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community status from the League of American Bicyclists, up from the Bronze rating it held back in 2010, and the city is working toward Gold. The University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon both hold Silver Bike Friendly University status of their own. Pittsburgh also ranks 12th among the 60 largest U.S. cities for the share of commuters who bike to work, according to BikePGH's annual commuting analysis -- ahead of plenty of cities with an easier reputation for cycling.

POGOH is Pittsburgh's bike-share system -- scan a bike's QR code with the POGOH app to unlock it, ride, and dock it at any POGOH station when you're done. A single ride starts at a $1 unlock fee plus a per-minute rate (19 cents a minute on a pedal bike, 32 cents on an e-bike); a day pass runs $16 with unlimited rides; and an annual membership is $150 a year with unlimited rides under 30 minutes included. More than half the fleet is e-assist, built specifically to handle Pittsburgh's hills. Stations are thickest Downtown and through Oakland, Shadyside, the Strip District, and Lawrenceville.

Pennsylvania drivers are legally required to give cyclists four feet of space when passing -- stricter than most states' three-foot rule -- and to slow down while doing it. It's one of the toughest passing laws in the country, and it applies on every public road, not just where there's a marked bike lane.

Legally, only if you're under 12 -- true for a regular bike or an e-bike. Nobody's required to wear one past that age, but on Pittsburgh's hills, it's still the easiest call you'll make all ride.

Yes. Pennsylvania skips the national "Class 1/2/3" e-bike system entirely -- state law just defines an e-bike as 750 watts or less, capped at 20 mph on motor power alone, for riders 16 and up, with no license or registration required. That's exactly why more than half of POGOH's fleet is e-assist: built to handle Pittsburgh's hills on the same lanes and trails as any other bike. A 28-mph "Class 3" e-bike doesn't meet Pennsylvania's definition, though -- that one isn't treated as a bicycle here.

Yes, both. Every Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus has a front rack that holds two bikes, and up to two bikes can ride the "T" at once -- though you can only load or unload at a high-platform station. E-bikes are fine on both. It's a normal way to stitch together a bike commute here, not a workaround.

A protected bike lane is physically separated from car traffic by a curb, planters, or parked cars, and it's the safest type on Pittsburgh's higher-traffic streets like Penn Avenue and Schenley Drive. A painted (or buffered) bike lane is a lane marked with paint, sometimes with an extra painted buffer strip, but no physical barrier. A sharrow -- short for "shared lane marking" -- is a painted symbol reminding drivers and cyclists to share a full travel lane; it's not a dedicated lane at all, just a lower-traffic street where you're expected to take the lane. This directory notes which type you're getting at every on-street access point.

The suburbs along the Montour Trail -- Moon Township, Cecil, McMurray, Upper St. Clair, Bethel Park, and South Park -- have some of the best trail access in the region, and it shows up in how homes get built there now: new-construction developments in South Fayette have gone up specifically along the trail, with trail access as the selling point. In the city, Shadyside, Bloomfield, Lawrenceville, Highland Park, South Side, and Oakland sit closest to the Three Rivers Heritage Trail and the Eliza Furnace Trail, with the shortest ride from door to trailhead.
